The National Technical University of Athens, founded in 1837, is the oldest and the most prestigious technical university in Greece, where the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering hosts the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems. The Knowledge and Media Systems Group in this institute is one of the largest groups in terms of staff size and research activities. The group employs PhD-level scientists in specific areas of ICT and is devoted to research activities in the fields of communication network design and management, systems architecture, performance analysis and evaluation, distributed systems design and management, and other advanced research areas. IBM Israel Science and Technology Limited, better known as IBM Research – Haifa, was first established in 1972. Since then, the lab has conducted decades of research vital to IBM’s success. The lab is one of 9 research laboratories located outside of the United States, and has close working relationships with IBM Israel and its twin research laboratory in Zurich. In Haifa, 25% of the technical staff have doctorate degrees in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, or related fields. Employees are actively involved in teaching in Israeli higher education institutions and in supervising post-graduate theses. R&D projects are being executed today in areas such as storage systems, cloud computing, healthcare and life sciences, verification technologies, analytics, business optimization, information retrieval, programming environments, and more.

The distributed systems research group at the Department of Computing Science conducts research and education on cloud and grid computing topics, including cloud and grid scheduling, distributed resource management, elasticity management, data center energy management, distributed monitoring and accounting, holistic management, cloud architecture design, and various enabling technologies such as live VM migration and re-contextualization.

CTI is operating according to the private sector regulations and is governed by its Board of Directors.
